University Science Center
Construction of the University Science Center was completed in spring 2010. This state-of-the-art academic facility houses the departments of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as the office of the dean of the College of Science and Technology. Construction began in fall 2008 and cost $17.5 million.
Planning for the University Science Center began in 2003 when the Arkansas General Assembly appropriated $240,000 to SAU to prepare a proposal for a science and technology building. During the next two legislative bienniums, the University received additional funding, and in 2006, Governor Mike Huckabee awarded $601,747 to the project. Governor Mike Beebe followed with a $1 million award in 2007. Architectural plans were prepared for the facility.
As a result of a special election and the passage of the Higher Education Technology and Facility Improvement Act, SAU received $1,432,980 for construction of the Center. In December 2007, the University issued bonds in the amount of $14,000,000.
The Center will ensure that Southern Arkansas University will be exceptionally well prepared for work or further education when they receive their degrees. Science classes were previously held in five different buildings to accommodate the growth of these programs. The new building provides classroom, laboratory, and research space as well as a large lecture hall and student lounges.
