Gaye Manning has been an employee of the Southern Arkansas University system since 1984 when she was hired as assistant personnel at SAU Tech. Thirty-nine years later, she is serving as both interim chancellor and vice chancellor for finance and administration. With retirement set for December of 2023, Manning intends to leave a portion of her estate to SAU.
Southern Arkansas University is delighted to announce that alumna Joan Dempsey and her husband, Jack Dempsey, are contributing a $1 million gift. In recognition of the significant commitment, the University has renamed the College of Liberal and Performing Arts as the Dempsey College of Liberal and Performing Arts.
Ron Harrell’s Mulerider memories are neatly represented by a tool from his days as an Engineering student at Southern State College – a slide rule. “This was the primary mathematical tool that we students used in the 1950s,” Harrell said. “It is a valuable tool, and you were taught to take care of it. We sent men to the moon using calculations on a tool like this.”
The SAU Foundation is thrilled to announce that it has received grants totaling $653,774 from the Windgate Foundation. An endowment gift of $500,000 will provide resources to support the growth and innovation within the Department of Art and Design by providing annual resources for tools and technology to elevate instruction. In addition, a bridge grant of $53,744 will be used for immediate enhancement of instruction within the Department.
A desire to generously give back to his community in a significant way inspired Joey Baker (77) to endow the Emerson, Arkansas Scholarship for students from his hometown who choose to make Southern Arkansas University their college home. “Emerson School and SAU helped shape who I am today,” Baker said. “I want to give back to them both in a meaningful way.”
Reason One for my support is that it is a way of paying back, with gratitude, for the great education I received that prepared me for medical school.
